1. Power Tailor Shop Marker
Inscription. Thomas P. Powers located his tailor shop in the building between the Loftus Store and Tinkham Furniture. In August of 1886, he sold his business and stock of clothing to Hamilton and Flaata. The following Tuesday night he started for Ireland, his native land. He returned to De Smet and in November 1886, he reopened the tailor business and had a full stock of clothes for suiting. He located his shop again on Main Street.

Laura and Mary Power were the best of friends. Mary was a tall, blue-eyed girl with long black hair. Her father was a tailor and had a store just across the street from the Ingalls storefront. Laura and Mary walked to and from school together and spent many hours together reading, crocheting and going sleigh riding with their many friends!

Mary Power grew up to be a spirited, pleasant woman. She married a banker, Edward Sanford. They lived across the street from Ma and Pa's final residence on Third Street until the early 1900s, when she and her husband moved to Bellingham, Washington. Ed continued his career as a banker. Mary and Edward were a childless couple.
