Welcome to Biltmore's Historic Gardens. Italian Garden. The Italian Garden next to Biltmore House was created by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to offer a spot for outdoor activities such as croquet and enjoying magnificent reflections of America's Largest Home. Originally referred to as the Terrace Garden, the formal design features a symmetric layout with statuary, water features, and topiary, flanked by walls and hedges. The water supply system in the three large pools still use original 1895 technology with water constantly flowing in and out of them, which is beneficial to the dozens of colorful koi that live in the pools. , Worth Noting , Our gardening team uses notes and orders found in estate archives to inform their plant selections. Blue and yellow irises and sedges bloom in late spring, followed by white and pink lotus blossoms in early to mid-summer. Egyptian papyrus, thalia, canna lilies, and Victoria water platters bloom throughout summer, along with an assortment of hardy and tropical water lilies.
