For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a hospital corpsman with D Company, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. In action against enemy agressor forces. Near Mapyeong, North Korea, on 5 April 1951. He DeWert, despite being wounded twice, made four separate forays into a hail of enemy fire to rescue wounded comrades, while rendering assistance to the fourth, was himself mortally wounded.
