Inscription. Asheville's bustling, cosmopolitan scene in the 1920s led to the opening of many department stores and exclusive shops along these three blocks of Haywood Street. For fifty years the area thrived until suburban malls lured shoppers away. Revitalization began in the 1980s, bring an eclectic mix of retail, commercial, and residential development.
