1. Burgonye and his Army Marker
Here you would have seen thousands of British, Irish, and German soldiers, women, and children in 1777. They had camped on this site in relative safety for the weeks between the two battles of Saratoga.
General Burgoyne's army had 3,800 British troops and about 400 "follower" women and children. More than 2,000 of them camped nearby. Their camp would have had lines of linen tents-each housing one officer or up to six soldiers, women, and children.
Men and boys from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany filled the ranks of the British regiments here. Burgoyne's Redcoats were well trained. But few had seen any combat before the Battles at Saratoga. Many soldiers brought their families with them.
Unlike their American counterparts, all British soldiers volunteered to join the army. The military provided them pay, food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. Retirees got pensions for long-term service or disability.
After the decisive American victory on October 7, Lieutenant-General John Burgoyne came back here to consider his next move. So many lay dead or wounded. Supplies were running out. The
