Noorse ontdekkingsreiziger. Hij wilde als eerste de Noordpool bereiken. Onderweg hoorde hij, in april 1909, dat Robert Peary hem voor was geweest. Hij veranderde zijn plannen en zette koers richting Zuidpool. Deze race won hij, met ιιn maand verschil, van Robert Falcon Scott. In 1926 lukte het hem om met het luchtschip Norge ook de Noordpool te bereiken.

Norwegian explorer. He wanted to be the first to reach the North Pole. On the way there, in April 1909, he learned that Robert Peary had beaten him to it. He changed his plans and headed for the South Pole. He won this race, arriving a month before Robert Falcon Scott. In 1926 Amunsen also managed to reach the North Pole with the airship Norge.
