Inscription. The oldest active post in the Marine Corps, Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., was founded in 1801 by President Thomas Jefferson and the second commandant of the Marine Corps, Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows. Better known as "8th & I," the Barracks supports a wide-range of ceremonial and security missions and is home to nationally recognized units, including the United States Marine Band, the marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. Along with the historic "Home of the Commandant's," Marine Barracks Washington, D.C. was registered as a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
