Capitol Hill in Tallahassee in Leon County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Charlotte County
Florida World War II Memorial
Established in September, 1943, Punta Gorda Airfield served as
an auxiliary training field for the Third Air Force Facility at
Saratoga Army Air Base. Fighter pilots trained in P-40’s, P-47’s, and P-51’s.
The 502nd Fighter-Bomber and 490th Fighter Squardons trained here.
The Experimental Aircraft Association presently uses one WW II
era structure. Numerous iron tie-downs that secured airplanes
remain visible and are used today for civilian aircraft as the
base became the Charlotte County Airport after the War.
The Charlotte County Historical Center’s permanent exhibit
includes WW II uniforms and the U.S. Navy flag that was raised
to signal the first wave of landings on Omaha Beach during the
June 1944 D-Day invasion.
