Capitol Hill in Tallahassee in Leon County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Dixie County
Florida World War II Memorial
Like patriotic Americans everywhere Dixie County responded to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor by enlisting our finest in our country’s service. Approximately 865 men and women from our small, north Florida county served in this conflict.
A young Dixie County man named Thaddeus Parker was one of the first to give his life in our nation’s service. Parker was a Navy enlisted man, whose heroism was honored when the Navy named a destroyer escort after him.
Cross City Airport, one of the best installations of its kind to be found in a small, rural county, got its start in World War II as an Army Air Corps training facility. Some of the pilots and crewmen later returned and made their homes in Dixie County.
Like veterans everywhere, those from Dixie County were proud to serve.
