Indian River County
During the war effort,
many Indian River County military personnel
made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of victory.

The county played a major role training naval air personnel.
The Vero Beach Naval Air Station trained navy and British pilots.
Landing strips in Sebastian simulated carrier decks
to prepare pilots for fleet landings.

Nearly 3,000 pilots were trained in fighters and dive bombers,
and 300 men trained in radar and gunnery.

105 trainees lost their lives in training accidents. Their names are inscribed on a plaque at the Vero Beach Airport.
