Hyde Park in Dutchess County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
On Guard
The United States entered World War II in 1941, which increased safety and security measures at the Roosevelt estate. The US Department of War deployed the 240th Military Police Battalion (left) to protect FDR wherever he went. His favorite rides included the woods and up to Top Cottage, his retreat on the eastern edge of the property.
The security infrastructure included barriers, gates, and electric eyes. An emergency communications system was also installed under the newly formed White House Signal Detachment. After FDR's death in 1945, almost all of it was removed. However, you can walk to the bottom of the hill to see surviving remnants.
