Hyde Park in Dutchess County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Growing Your Own: A Roosevelt Ideal
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt believed that all Americans had the right to a good standard of living. The Roosevelts greatly prized their own home grown produce. During the Great Depression and the war years, they knew that people with neither land nor wealth could improve the quality of their lives by growing their own food. They believed that, with a little know-how, people in urban situations or with limited resources could grow fresh food in season.
This small space garden exhibit features simple, innovative and affordable ways to grow your own food, even if you don't have a lot of room or time for a garden. Try one: it's fun, gratifying and delicious!
