By 1880, the mills on the south side of the Brandywine stopped grinding. This became the property of the City of Wilmington. In 1902, the Water Department who controlled the property installed two Holly vertical, three-cylinder triple-expansion steam pumping engines. One has been removed but the second, still in place and in excellent condition, is housed in the original pump house. The straight classic lines of the buildings reflect their construction in the early twentieth century.
