1. Monrovia Architectural Styles Marker
As the fourth incorporated city in Los Angeles County, Monrovia has a rich heritage of over 125 years of representing the diverse architectural styles seen in Southern California.
When Monrovia was established, the Victorian era Queen Anne Revival was the common architectural style. Midtown Monrovia still has several homes that date back to the City's incorporation in 1887.
At the turn of the twentieth century, housing styles were moving away from Victorian influence, but a new dominant style had not yet emerged. American Foursquare and Victorian Transitional were popular styles. Transitional styles showed early influences of the Craftsman aesthetic, considered "a little bit Victorian, a little bit Arts and Crafts."
Motion pictures had become one of America's primary forms of entertainment in the 1920s. Movie sets introduced audiences to new styles of buildings from different eras. This spawned an eclectic architectural period including Colonial, Spanish, and Tudor Revivals.
