Built as the Pennsylvania State House

Congress Hall
Built as the County Court House

1802 ❦ Charles Willson Peale rents the second floor of the State House for his Museum and Portrait Gallery through 1837.
1812 ❦ New fire-proof offices replace the original office wings and arcades; replaced by the present wings and arcades.
1818 ❦ City of Philadelphia buys the State House for use as municipal offices.
1824 ❦ Lafayette's visit inspires first use of term "Hall of Independence" to describe the State House Assembly Room.
1846 ❦ Liberty Bell is moved from the State House tower into the Assembly Room.
1850s ❦ By mid-1850s the State House is commonly known as "Independence Hall."

1852-54 ❦ City installs a shrine to Founders and Liberty Bell in Independence Hall.
1873 ❦ Independence Hall is renovated and re-opened as "The National Museum."
1876 ❦ Centennial of the nation is celebrated with additional exhibits at Independence Hall.
1922 ❦ Old City Hall is restored and,
