Banneker Junior High School was built in 1938 at 800 Euclid St., NW as a junior high school In August 1981, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School opened as a specialized public institution, providing secondary students with a highly structured college preparatory program.

The Benjamin Banneker Academic High School curriculum offers rigorous and diverse academic experiences to its students. Ranked among the best high schools in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School maintains a diverse student community and 100% college acceptance rate at the time of printing. Banneker students exemplify the model of resilience, grit, and success. the Banneker community shares a sense of connection and many members serve as role models in a variety of fields and occupations.

As a Blue Ribbon School (1990, 2007, 2017) recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, with students that embrace academic challenges and community service, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School equips students with the tools needed to achieve academic success and empowers them to compete globally.

This modernized building and site, located at 1600 9th St., NW, opened in August 2021 with a variety of spaces to support learning and instruction, including outdoor classrooms and multiple site amenities.
