Shaw Junior High School was established in 1919 at the M Street School (128 M St., NW). Shaw Junior High School was relocated to the former William McKinley Manual Training School building at 7th Street and Rhode Island Ave., NW in 1928. Under Principal Percy L. Ellis' leadership, Shaw Junior High continued to gain national attention. In 1977, a new home for Shaw Junior High was built at 925 Rhode Island Ave., NW as an "open space" community school. In addition to its academic reputation, Shaw Junior High's 300-member marching band was one of the most highly decorated in the country. In 2008, Shaw and Garnet-Patterson Junior High School were consolidated at the Garnet-Patterson building (2001 10th St., NW). The school closed in 2013.
