2. The Finch Building.
This nearly 17,000 square foot building was completed in 1880 by local businessman J.E. Finch. Finch was a Canadian immigrant to Hastings who purchased this empty lot nine years earlier from W. J. Van Dyke for the price of $3,500, a high premium for prime location in the growing downtown. Contractor J. L. Powers ordered the bricks for the exterior to be shipped up the Mississippi River from St. Louis at a price of $29 per thousand bricks.(Submitted on November 25, 2022, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)When the building opened in December 1880, visitors complimented the black walnut chandeliers which decorated the first floor, remarking upon their elegance. J.E Finch and his son Frank operated the drug store until 1911, when Finch retired and Frank continued the family business.
3. East Second Street Commercial Historic District.
Downtown district consisting of thirty-five commercial buildings built between 1860 and 1900. The downtown area retained its historic integrity even as other communities modernized their downtowns as a result of post-World War II urban renewal efforts. The district contains a number of two- and three-story buildings, each in a unique style. Although the buildings are very different, common features include distinctive parapets at the roofline, often with the name of the business inlaid in brick or metal. The storefronts include large display windows with a main entrance flanked by cast iron or wooden columns. The upper levels of the buildings often include windows topped with ornate hoods.(Submitted on November 25, 2022, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
