Inscription. Here stands the last remaining commercial building from the once vibrant Smokey Hollow community. This structure served not only as a locally run barbershop but as a place where community members came to swap stories and hear the news of the day. Run by Raleigh "Mr. Barber™ Powell, the building was a one-man operation that contained a barber chair, sink, stove heater, and enough benches to accommodate those who would come for a haircut or conversation.

The barbershop was formerly located on East St. Augustine Street, west of the railroad track, just east of this location. When the community was displaced due to Tallahassee's urban renewal program in the 1960s, the shop was relocated to the Walter Criswell Juvenile Detention Center and then sat vacant for decades when the center closed in the mid-1990s. Thanks to the efforts of Richard Boutin, who completed the state's property appraisals in Smokey Hollow during the 1960s, former Smokey Hollow residents staff from the John G. Riley House Museum, and the Department of State Division of Historical Resources, the building was rediscovered and verified to be an authentic Smokey Hollow structure.

With help from Lively Technical Center, the building was rehabilitated to its current condition and moved here near its original location in Smokey Hollow.
