"I was commissioned by the Village of Elk Grove, Illinois to create a memorial for four soldiers killed in the Afghan-Iraq war. They wanted a memorial that was more about family and honor, hence the children and lack of weapons. The soldier wears non-descript fatigues that might be worn by any of the men and women of the five branches of our armed force. This was one of the hardest pieces emotionally that I have ever done."
