Inscription.
Faribault is Rice County Seat
After a contentious struggle with Cannon City for the county seat, Faribault was chosen in 1855. Early courts were held in a one-story brick structure before the first official courthouse (left) was built in 1874 at the current courthouse location. A monument honoring the Rice County military still stands.

City Fire & Police Departments
Before fire trucks, horses like Dolly & Button (center) brought firefighters and equipment to fires. A steam fire engine was purchased in 1872, and a fire truck was in use by 1919. Since 1858, the City Police Department has kept law and order. The 1883 police force (right) shows Mr. Perkins, Chief W. Delaney, and Mr. Kline.

Spurred by the completion of the area's first steam-powered sawmill in early 1854, Faribault grew from a sleepy settlement of 20 buildings to a bustling town with more than 250. Historians attribute Faribault's impressive growth during this period to a number of important milestones in 1855 and 1856, including the creation of roads connecting to other settlements and trading posts in Iowa and Minnesota Territory, the availability of mail service, and the construction of schools and churches. The City of Faribault was platted in 1855 and granted a home-rule charter in 1872.
