Hurrah! Hurray! A rousing Hullabaloo (RAH)
Our Alma Mater in Dixie Land, Hurrah!
For Black and Blue.

Omicron Delta Kappa, The Hopkins Songbook, 1922

For over forty years, Johns Hopkins University sports teams lacked a mascot. In the 1910s, Hopkins' sports teams were known simply as "the Black and Blue," the University's athletic colors.

In 1920, a student run humor magazine took the name The Black and Blue Jay—"Jay" probably referring to the "J" in Johns Hopkins. In 1922, The Hullabaloo, Hopkins' yearbook, still referred to the sports teams primarily as "the Black and Blue," but also began calling the football team the Blue Jays.

On November 2, 2013, Hopkins students gave their mascot an official name: Jay the Blue Jay.

All nice boys except Jake Miller and he would be if he didn't talk so much." 2 Undergraduate women were admitted into the university in 1970, and by 1976, students formed a women's varsity lacrosse team. 3 Taken from the 1925 yearbook, this was likely the first page of the description of that year's Lacrosse season.
