West Hobson House
The West Hobson House is an architecturally significant Greek Revival-Italianate center hall cottage built c. 1858 by Richard Swain, a ship captain. The Greek Revival details. include Corinthian columns, stylized harp cast-iron railing and general monumental scale. Its Italianate details are displayed with the paired corbels along the entablature and, singular in the Garden District, the unique three-sided bay window and parallel projection of the façade. The interior original fine features include lacy pierced plaster crown molding and medallions and carved marble mantles. The verdant rear garden is expansive and the many flowering gardenias and sweet olive create a fragrant landscape. The family of Isaac West and his wife Laura Baldwin Tomkins resided here from 1881- 1929, John Barnfather Hobson III and his wife Ann Kendall Hobson Haack and their family have owned the house since 1963, making this one of the best preserved, single- family homes in the Garden District.
