1. 4th and Main Marker
Inscription. La Crosse was established as a commercial center when Nathan Myrick set up his fur trading post on Barron's Island in 1841. The La Crosse Commercial Historic District represents the city's architectural development from the 1860's to 1940. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
 
Erected 1999 by the City of La Crosse, the City's Historic Preservation Commission and the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. (Marker Number 3.)
