Hendrik Dienske diende tijdens de meidagen van 1940 bij het regiment dat deelnam aan de strijd om Rotterdam. Het werd de basis voor zijn latere verzetswerk. Rondom de Waalkerk in Amsterdam-Zuid, waar hij ouderling was en vlakbij woonde, ontstond eind 1940 een kleine verzetsgroep die Joodse onderduikers aan onderdak hielp.
Dienske werd in 1943 provinciaal leider van de Landelijke Organisatie voor Hulp aan Onderduikers voor Noord-Holland en had het toezicht op de verspreiding van distributiebenodigdheden voor achttienduizend mensen.
Hij werd verraden en in april 1944 gearresteerd, waarna hij in verschillende kampen verbleef. Er is een school naar hem vernoemd en hij ontving diverse onderscheidingen, waaronder het Verzetskruis, de Medal of Freedom en Rechtvaardige onder de Volkeren van Yad Vashem.
Hendrik Dienske served during the days of May in 1940 with the regiment that took part in the battle for Rotterdam. It became the basis for his later resistance work. Around the Waalkerk in Amsterdam South, where he was a deacon and lived nearby, a small resistance group arose at the end of 1940 that helped Jewish people in hiding find shelter.
In 1943 Dienske became provincial leader of the National Organization for Help to People in Hiding for North Holland and supervised the distribution of distribution supplies for eighteen thousand people.
He was betrayed and arrested in April 1944, after which he was detained in various camps. A school is named after him and he has received several awards, including the Resistance Cross, the Medal of Freedom and Righteous Among the Nations from Yad Vashem.

Excerpt on his posthumous awards (in translation): By Royal Decree of 7 May 1946 he was posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross. The American government awarded him the Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm on May 7, 1953 in Amsterdam.
