For People and Wildlife

All of the trees, shrubs and flowers around you were planted for a reason — to reestablish a place for wildlife to flourish. Wildlife and people need the same things: water, food and shelter. Birds in particular are in need of proper habitat.
More than a Mascot
The Baltimore Oriole is the symbol of our baseball team, but was originally named for the fact that the male's colors resemble Lord Baltimore's coat-of-arms.
These birds feed in open meadows, but need the protection of wooded areas. While a few birds may be tempted to stay year-round, most migrate in large flocks to southern Mexico and Central and South America. Look for them to return in April when you will hear them before you see them. Also, look for their nests — intricately woven gourd-shaped structures located in the fork of the tree branches.
Attracting Birds to Your Yard
You can create a bird-friendly habitat. Just consider the things that you need: water, food, shelter and diversity. Some of the plants you see here are good choice.
Creating a Rest Stop for Birds
We are located in the center of the Atlantic Flyway, one of four major migratory corridors. Each fall, birds take to the skies to fly south for the winter. Some bird species travel for thousands of miles. Finding suitable places like this along the way to rest and refuel is key to whether they will survive the journey.
