Jaap Eden
Hij was een Nederlands schaatser, wielrenner en bandyspeler, de voorloper van ijshockey. Op 15-jarige leeftijd werd hij ontdekt door schaatser Klaas Pander, die hem ging trainen. In december 1890 won hij zijn eerste schaatswedstrijd op de korte baan en een jaar later debuteerde hij op internationaal niveau. Later stapte hij over op de wielersport en ook hier was hij succesvol. In 1894 werd hij wereldkampioen op de 10 kilometer en een jaar later op de sprint. Hij was geliefd bij het publiek, zowel door zijn prestaties als door zijn manier van optreden. In 1915 beλindigde hij zijn carriθre en probeerde een baan te vinden maar dat was erg lastig. Trofeeλn en medailles werden verkocht maar zorgden slechts tijdelijk voor inkomsten Jaap Eden stierf in Haarlem op 51-jarige leeftijd. Er werd een groot grafmonument opgericht, op initiatief van de sportjournalist Leo Lauer. Op het graf staat hij afgebeeld als sportheld.
Jaap Eden was a Dutch skater, cyclist and bandy (forerunner of ice hockey) player. At the age of 15 he was discovered by skater Klaas Pander, who started training him. In December 1890 he won his first short track skating competition and a year later he made his debut at the international level. He later switched to cycling and was successful here too. In 1894 he became world champion in the 10 kilometers and a year later in the sprint. He was loved by the audience both for his performance and for his manner. In 1915 he ended his career and tried to find a job, but it was very difficult. Trophies and medals were sold but only provided temporary income. Jaap Eden died in Haarlem at the age of 51. A large grave monument was erected on the initiative of the sports journalist Leo Lauer. On that monument, he is depicted as a sports hero.
