Norcross in Gwinnett County, Georgia — The American South (South Atlantic)
American Elm
Ulmus americana
| | State Champion Tree | |
The tree is estimated to have been growing since the early 1700s; the City of Norcross was established in 1870, 150 years later. The tree was likely once surrounded by cotton fields; as the town grew, dirt roads, some homes and a church were part of its environment. The tree also survived the devastating Dutch Elm Disease, which killed most American Elms throughout North America in the early and mid-1900s.
The City has a proactive care program for the tree including fertilizations, inoculations to minimize diseases, lightening protection, and support cables and bracing for the massive limbs. The large area of mulch under the tree is designed to protect the critical root zone of the tree.
The tree is a remarkable specimen and loved by the citizens of Norcross. please help us protect it by enjoying its beauty and magnificence from the sidewalks surrounding the park.
Erected by City of Norcross.
