De Nederlandse kunstenaar Theo van Doesburg is, naast Piet Mondriaan, een van de oprichters van De Stijl, een beweging die zich bezig hield met abstractie, eenvoud en een nieuw soort toegepaste kunst. De energieke Van Doesburg was kunstschilder, schrijver, typograaf, ontwerper en architect. Hij was autodidact en exposeerde voor het eerst in Den Haag (1908). Vanaf 1912 begon hij over kunst te publiceren. Hij bestudeerde het werk van Kandinsky en werkte samen met architect J.J.P. Oud aan een villa.
The Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg is, alongside Piet Mondrian, one of the founders of De Stijl, a movement concerned with abstraction, simplicity and a new kind of applied art. The energetic Van Doesburg was a painter, writer, typographer, designer and architect. He was self-taught and exhibited for the first time in The Hague (1908). From 1912 he started to publish about art. He studied the works of Kandinsky and collaborated with architect J.J.P. Oud on a villa.
