The M113 is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier. It was the most widely used armored vehicle of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was used to break through heavy thickets in the jungles and attack and overrun enemy positions. The production of the M113 introduced an aluminum armor that made it much lighter than earlier vehicles. This new armor was thick enough to protect the crew and passengers from small arms fire but made it light enough that it was able to be transported by air and could be amphibious. The M113 series has been replaced, in the United States Army, as front-line combat vehicles by the M2 and M3 Bradleys, but it is still used in support roles such as armored ambulances, mortar carriers, engineer vehicles, and command vehicles.
