1. A Sanctuary for Self-Sufficiency
Fair Lane, the home of Clara and Henry Ford, reflects the Fords' interests and achievements in developing a self-reliant lifestyle true to their agricultural roots. In addition to the stately house, a number of other buildings were essential to the estate's operations.

When the large Powerhouse/Garage was constructed in 1914, it was a rare engineering and architectural feat. It included a hydroelectric power plant that provided electricity to the estate. It also contained sophisticated water filtration and boiler systems.

2. The Power of Water
Although water played an important role in the original siting of the estate along the banks of the Rouge River, it has adversely affected building foundations, walls and roofs over the years. Restoration and repairs to structures, courtyards, retaining walls, electrical service, and drainage lines began in earnest in 2014 and continue throughout the property today.

The smaller building adjacent to the Powerhouse/Garage is the Potting Shed. The original glass-roofed greenhouses were removed for safety reasons in the 1950s, but the building continues to serve as a hub for gardening activity.
