Everglades City in Collier County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Hurricane Wilma
Monday, October 24, 2005
In the hours before dawn Hurricane Wilma made landfall just a few miles Northwest of Everglades City at Cape Romano.
Leaving Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category I storm, she moved into Southwest Florida as a category III Hurricane bringing devastation to our community before moving Northeast across the state.
Hurricane Wilma's high winds and water surge nearly destroyed this landmark, our historic Everglades City Hall, which served as Collier County's first Courthouse and government building.
It was through the resources and commitment of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Collier County Commission and Manager that our community was able to rebuild this piece of history.
