"Originally determined eligible by the Keeper of the National Register in the Caltrans 1985 Historic Metal Truss Bridges in California Thematic Resources study; its continued eligibility was confirmed in the 2004 Caltrans Historic Bridge Inventory update: Metal Truss Bridges. The bridge is individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C for its Pratt truss construction, as an early example of work by master bridge builder Judson Manufacturing Company, and as the only remaining metal truss bridge in Merced County. The period of significance is 1912. Shaffer Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic when the replacement bridge (39C0346) was completed in 2003.
