1. History of Eastpoint Mall Marker
The opening of Eastpoint Mall was celebrated with great fanfare. The band played as thousands of enthusiastic shoppers watched the Governor of Maryland cut the ribbon to officially open the Eastpoint Shopping Center. Built in 18 months on 63 acres of land at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and North Point Boulevard, Eastpoint was Baltimore's premier shopping center. The center housed 40 stores including Hutzler's and Hothschild-Kohn, whose own specially built window display of live penguins entertained patrons young and old alike. Hess Shoes also had monkeys in their windows. Enclosed in 1972 and completely renovated and expanded in 1991, Eastpoint Mall has continued to faithfully serve Dundalk, Essex and East Baltimore communities over the years. As Eastpoint Mall celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2006, it still provides a diverse selection of over 115 retail stores, services and eateries.
