Overview (in translation): Hugo Burghauser was born in Vienna in 1896 to an Italian mother and a Sudeten German father. He attended the teacher training college and studied bassoon at the K.u.K. Music Academy with Johann Böhm and counterpoint with Joseph Marx. In 1919 he became a member of the State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Schalk, where he rose to become first bassoonist and in 1932 he was appointed director of the orchestra. From 1922 to 1934 Burghauser taught orchestral instruments at the Academy of Music, from 1937 in the bassoon class. He worked closely with the conductors Arturo Toscanini, Richard Strauss, Clemens Krauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Bruno Walter. In 1938 Burghauser managed to flee to Canada, where he played bassoon in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In 1941 he went to the USA and became a member of the NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Arturo Toscanini. From 1943 to 1965 Burghauser worked for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.(Submitted on January 16, 2023.)
