Old Pine's patriot pastor pleaded reasons of unfairness of taxation without representation with persuasive and fluent discourse.

His impassioned sermons sustained his actions for liberty.

4 days after the Declaration of Independence was publicly read, Governor Thomas Mifflin appointed Duffield Chaplain of the Penna militia.

In October, 1777 Duffield was appointed co-chaplain of the Continental Congress.
