Inscription. One of the oldest trees in the garden, this Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea) is thought to have been grown from seeds collected in Tennessee or Kentucky by French botanist and explorer Andrι Michaux and sent to John Jr. and William Bartram in the 1790s. A member of the bean family (Fabaceae), the Yellowwood produces an extravagant show of trailing, fragrant, off-white blossoms, often in alternate years.
