Inscription.

Stanley W. Cottrell. Jr. son of Stanley and Ida Belle Sharp Cottrell, went to Munfordville Elementary School and graduated from Munfordville High School in the class of 1961. He began his running career by winning the 100 yard dash at the 1959 Hart County Fair. In 1960. Stanley accepted a $5 bet from classmates that he could not run from Horse Cave to Munfordville. Stanley won, as he raced the 8 miles in 45 minutes, but collected only $3.
In the years to come, Stanley would become the World's foremost Ultra-Distance Runner. In 1980 he ran from New York to San Francisco, 3.103 miles in 48 days, earning a place in the "Guiness Book of World Records.” In 1984, he ran across China on "Great Friendship Run,” 2,124 miles from the Great Wall to Guangzhou in 53 days. In 1992, to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyage, he ran 1,492 miles across South America. Stanley's running feats have circumnavigated the globe 8 times. He is the pioneer of extraordinary human performance in the sport of running. To date. Stanley, one of America's greatest ambassador-athletes, has run in 39 nations on "Friendship Runs."
