Inscription. Although this home has had numerous owners throughout its history, its most famous owner was world-renowned writer Alex Haley (1921-1992), author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family and The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Haley and his wife Dr. Myran Lewis Haley purchased the home in 1990. The Haleys also owned a farm on the outskirts of Clinton. Other notable citizens of Clinton who have lived here include Nestor Grotelueschen (1900-1987) & Myrtle Grotelueschen (1901-1971) who were instrumental in establishing organized recreational activities for the youth of Clinton during World War II which led to the construction of the Memorial Rec Center in 1945. In 1950, the home was purchased by Russell Moxley (1908-1987), treasurer of Magnet Mills and Clinton city alderman, and Clarice Moxley (1911-2005).
