Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, Jr.
1912 - 1994
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill attended St. John's High School and Boston College, from which he embarked upon a lifelong career in public service. He was elected to the Massachusetts General Court in 1936. In 1949 he became the first Democrat elected Speaker of the body. In 1953 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for 34 years. The respect and admiration of his peers led to his election as Speaker in 1977, a post he held for five consecutive terms. O'Neill led his colleagues by following his own political principle: "all politics is local." He protected the rights and needs of his constituents, particularly those most in need of help. Public service was his life. That service is strongly reflected in the Boston you see today.
