Cleo and Mary Alice Wiley
Cleo and Mary Alice Wiley called Upland, Indiana their home. Here, they built, owned, and operated two successful businesses. They were very active in the community.
Cleo Wiley was born in Upland in 1912. Mary Alice Powell moved to Upland from Pendleton, Indiana in 1928. They were married in the Upland Methodist Church on Christmas Eve of 1936.
Cleo and Mary Alice ran multiple businesses together for 24 years. They operated Wiley Coal Yard from 1941 until 1960. In 1961, following a dream of Cleo's, they opened Wiley's Drive In.
The drive-in was sold in 1965 and subsequently renamed Ivanhoe's Drive In. Following the sale of Wiley's Drive In, Cleo became the Upland Water Superintendent and Mary Alice worked as a teller at the Upland United Bank until their retirement. They were members and leaders in many clubs and organizations and Cleo served as fire chief for 10 years.
Cleo and Mary Alice spent their entire adult lives in Upland and were completely devoted to the tight-knit community. Their impact still resonates within the town of Upland today.
