The Midtown Community Center first opened on February 2, 1945, in support of the World War II Manhattan Project workers and residents. The building's first use was a meeting place and recreation hall for the Middletown area, which included trailers, temporary houses, businesses, and the Fairview Elementary School.

Also known as the Wildcat Den (serving the high school youth from 1951 to 1966), the building is now home to the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association, which formed in September 1999, and the Oak Ridge History Museum, which opened in October 2018. The museum tells the unique history of Oak Ridge, with emphasis on the "Secret City” years, and the stories of those that lived in that special time and place.
