1. Site of Wright's Store Marker

Inscription. The first store in Coloma, as well as the first store between Sutter’s Fort and Utah, was opened near this site in the summer of 1848 by Stephen Wright. It was built of lumber cut at Sutter’s Mill, on the foundation of a cabin planned for John Sutter. Wright soon sold the store to Sam Brannan, a merchant who became California’s first millionaire. This store’s location determined the site of the booming town which was later built around it.
