1. Montford Point Marines of St. Louis Marker
Inscription. This is dedicated to the men of the Montford Point Marines from St. Louis, Missouri. Montford Point Marine Base was established in 1942 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The base was a segregated basic training camp for blacks after President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued order #8802 on June 25, 1941 allowing nearly 20,000 black marines to be trained at Montford Point between 1942 and 1948. In spite of segregation and prejudice, the black marines fought during World War II and were highly respected for their dedication.
