Jan Jacob Rochussen 1797-1891
Zoon van een ambtenaar die het tot Directeur der Accijnzen bracht. Hij verwierf een grondige kennis van belastingen en economie. In 1826 werd hij tot secretaris van de invloedrijke Kamer van Koophandel in Amsterdam benoemd. Als gouverneur-generaal van Nederlands-Indiλ was hij in de jaren 1845-1851 actief bij het onder Nederlands gezag brengen van de buitengewesten. Zijn conservative beleid leidde uiteindelijk tot zijn val.
Son of a civil servant who rose to Director of Excise. He acquired a thorough knowledge of taxation and economics. In 1826 he was appointed secretary of the influential Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam. As governor-general of the Dutch East Indies, he was active in bringing the outlying regions under Dutch rule in the years 1845-1851. His conservative policy eventually led to his downfall.
