1. Saxapahaw Mill Marker
Inscription.
John Newlin began construction of the Saxapahaw Cotton Mill in 1844. The mill was owned by the Newlin family until it was sold to Edwin Holt in 1873 and was later run by Holt's sons-in-law under the name White-Williamson and Company. The mill operated under this ownership until it was abandoned in 1924. In 1927 Charles Sellars purchased the mill and sought the help of his nephew B. Everett Jordan to help manage the operations. Jordan and his wife, Katherine, committed themselves to the care of the mill and village and were instrumental in building the Saxapahaw community.

In 1978 the mill was sold to Dixie Yarns. In 1994, after 150 years in operation, the Saxapahaw Cotton Mill closed its doors and ceased operations after a tornado damaged the mill. In 1995, the Jordan family purchased the mill property back from Dixie Yarns and began work to revitalize the mill. Saxapahaw Rivermill operates today as a beautifully restored cotton mill offering apartments, townhomes, and cottages.
