History of Ownership
The year was 1927 and this log structure was destined to be torn down by its owner, Thomas Pyles, who had built a new house for his family, word went out and the Potomac Valley Chapter WV #4-042 N.S.D.A.R. raised $200 to purchase the building. The building was in poor repair. Time passed and funds were hard to raise so in the 1930's the building was deeded to the Mineral County court for $1 in order to be eligible for WPA funding & restoration work. Ownership returned to the N.S.D.A.R. and the "Old Fort" museum opened on July 4, 1939.

In 1968 the Fort Ashby Chapter WV #4-057 N.S.D.A.R. was formed and shared in the care & programing of the museum. Full ownership was deeded to the Fort Ashby Chapter in 1988. That chapter established the Friends of Ashby's Fort, Inc. In 2014, ownership was deeded to the friends on June 7, 2016.
