Petoskey in Emmet County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Braun's Restaurant
Hemingway's Michigan
Ernest Hemingway's 1925 satiric novel, The Torrents of Spring, is set mainly in Petoskey. He knew about Braun's Restaurant at 210-212 Howard Street, and in the novel he used the lay-out of the restaurant, which he called "Brown's Beanery The Best by Test," to create three important scenes in the book. For example, a newcomer eating at the Beanery is so charmed by an elderly waitress that soon they are married, but when they go to celebrate at the Beanery, the husband is stirred by seeing the lovely young waitress!
