its construction. She was the widow of oilman Frank Emery, who at the time of his death was considered one of the richest men in California. Prominent Southern California architect Myron Hunt designed the Tudor Revival house, and worked with landscape architects Florence Yoch & Lucile Council designing the gardens surrounding the house.

Today known as Thornton Gardens, this is currently the estate of Charles and Geneva Thornton, who in 2018 gave their home and gardens to the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation along with an endowment. The endowment is earmarked to fund all preservation and maintenance done to the 10-acre estate when it transfers to the Trust. The Thorntons will continue to live in their home and it will remain a private residence during the lifetimes of the couple. Future plans call for the site to one day be operated under the co-stewardship agreement with the nearby Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. At that time, it will serve as the residence for its president and visiting scholars.
