The Alvah N. Belding Library is a well-preserved Classical Revival structure, representative of the popular architectural form for civic buildings in the early twentieth century. The library was designed by Frank P. Allen & Son, of Grand Rapids, a firm noted for the design of small civic structures, including libraries, schools, and the Lake County (Michigan) Courthouse. Constructed of Bedford limestone in 1917-18, the one- and-one-half-story building was a gift to the city of Belding from Alvah N. Belding in memory of his parents, Hiram and Mary Wilson Belding. Alvah N. Belding, along with his brothers Hiram H. and Milo M., were partners in a prosperous silk manufacturing and wholesaling enterprise. In the early twentieth century the Belding Brothers operated numerous silk mills throughout the country, including four mills in Belding.
